    Description

    A rare research book.
There were thousands of the West Indies 1898 Spanish American War Sampson Medal's that were not claimed by the naval and Marine veterans as of 1906. This book lists all of the medals by, and includes both the Phase I and Phase II medals.
If you Sampson medal is a single piece, there is a good chance that falls into this unclaimed category.
The lists within this pamphlet are reprinted from a series run in
    The Blue Jacket
in 14 successive issues from January 1906 through February 1907. The purpose, as explained in the introduction to the first list (page 1), was to encourage veterans of the West Indies Naval Campaign to claim Sampson Medals being held by the Bureau of Navigation. These were the original phase I medals which covered 34 ships and 9 engagements. Approximately 6000 medals were made up for Phase I. The lists as published in
    The Blue Jacket
cover approximately 2700 names from 26 ships (one of which was not identified).
Also included is a September 1906 announcement of the ship included in the Phase II expansion of eligibility (Page 14) and a combined Phase I and Phase II listing from April 1907 (Page 15), both also from
    The Blue Jacket
. The Bancroft was erroneously omitted from the September 1906 Phase II list.
There are 16 pages in this staple bound book.
