SILICIFIED OYSTERS (2)
Unusual silicified oysters, fossilized in the Miocene Age, glow fluorescent yellow under a UV light. Over a period of 6 million years the oysters were replaced with silica in the form of gray-blue to brown chert. They were found in a prehistoric oyster bed in an exposed bank of the Hillsborough River 10 miles inland from Tampa Bay.
The 2 oysters average 3 and 1/2 inches long by 1 and 1/2 inches wide.
These were collected personally before development came along and covered most of the site with cement.
