Andy Smith is a contemporary ceramicist from North Carolina. Andy Smith, developed a style of raku pottery that used traditional Oriental forms & a tight geometrical design. The design work was both abstract & architectural. His use of underglaze colors was uniquely his own. He made a transition to sagger raku several years ago. This new line is more organic and free-formed. He does occasionally blend the tight design with the looser sagger creating a style all his own. He continues to create work whose sole purpose is to enhance the space it occupies.Andy began his clay studies at Wingate College in North Carolina in 1976. Afull-time potter for more than 30 years, he shows his work in galleries from the Virgin Islands to Boston, Massachusetts. Andy is an exhibiting artist member of the Carolina Designer Craftsmen’s Guild in Raleigh, North Carolina, and the Piedmont Craftsmen’s Guild in Winston-Salem. He lives and works in Marshville, North Carolina.
