Man steals car at gunpoint in Syracuse, leads officers on car chase, police say

Syracuse, N.Y. — A man stole a car at gunpoint Tuesday and led officers on a car chase through Syracuse streets, police said.
Around 8:48 p.m., Antoni Martinez, 19, and another person approached a man on Whitwell Drive and displayed a handgun, Kieran Coffey, a spokesperson for the Syracuse Police Department. They told the man, who was inside his vehicle, to get out or they would shoot him he said.
Martinez pointed his handgun at the victim’s head and demanded the keys to the vehicle, a 2023 Dodge Charger, police said in criminal complaint filed in Syracuse City Court.
Coffey said Martinez fled and the other person fled in the vehicle.
Around 9:20 p.m., the car was spotted on a camera at Milton and Charles avenues in Solvay, he said.
Around 10:19 p.m., officers were investigating another report of a stolen vehicle in the 100 block of Aberdeen Terrace when they spotted the stolen car, Coffey said.
Coffey said the driver of the Charger fled from police and led them on a brief car chase. The driver — Martinez — stopped the car in the 3600 block of Court Street and fled on foot, he said.
Officers caught Martinez in the 400 block of Gaynor Avenue, Coffey said.
Martinez was charged with first-degree robbery and first-degree criminal use of a firearm. He is being held in the Onondaga County Justice Center on $300,000 cash and $500,000 bond.
